Lifting light and heavy weights will both release hormones to help your body grow muscle mass. But, what makes your body produce more muscle mass; heavy or lighter weights?

This is a very simples answer: HEAVY weight always produces more muscle mass, if you lifting light weights for longer periods of time then you are defining not building!
Whereas if your lifting big heavy weights even for only a few reps your going to rips more muscle fibres when compared to longer sets using lighter weights!
Always Go Heavy For Growth
Building muscle mass hurts, makes you feel sick and causes your heart to pump like a piston. Lifting heavy will set off a chain reaction and your body will compensate this by growing bigger muscle
If you want bulging muscles and bigger growth then the heavier the weight you are lifting the bigger your muscles will adapt. As the saying goes “Lift heavy or go home!”
Even if you’re lifting a few reps at a time, your body is going to adapt and make compensation for this. So the next time you go to lift the same weight after you have rested you’re going to be able to lift more as time goes by!
